Fox Fundamentals

50 minutes of essential sequences rooted in the Pilates principles, designed for the body to find form, not failure. Fewer layers, slower pace, more time for detail. Always with options to progress depending on what your body needs that day.

Who it's for

The detail is always there. Fundamentals gives you the time to find it.

Never been on a reformer?

Before class even starts, we'll walk you through the reformer: where everything is, how it works and how to use it. First times are always a little daunting, and we don't want yours to be.

Coming back after a break?

Welcome back. Whether it's been six months or six years, or your body needs a little extra care right now, Fundamentals is the right place to ease back in. Nothing is rushed and nothing is assumed.

Want the how and the why?

Some people find Pilates and it rewires the way they think about their body. If you're already asking questions, Fundamentals is where they get answered, and where you'll find ten more to replace them.

What 50 minutes looks like

  1. Warm-up

Exercises chosen to explore the core Pilates principles: breath, pelvis and ribcage placement, shoulder blade stability and mobility, and how your hips, knees, ankles and feet line up. We'll break down the details so you can feel them in your body.

  2. The main work

Essential repertoire and full-body sequencing. We'll point out the patterns you'll come back to in every class, using props where they help you connect or line up. This is where there are options to make each exercise more supportive or more challenging. Take whichever works for you.

  3. Cool-down

Don't skip this bit. Your nervous system needs it. You'll leave the room moving and feeling better than when you came in.

How hard is it?

Fundamental doesn't necessarily mean easy. That's completely subjective, and the more body aware you become, the harder Pilates gets.

That said, this isn't the class where we want you feeling wrecked. No "pain is progress" here. Just good form checks, clear cueing and support along the way.

Some of what you might see

Footwork

It isn't in every class, as it depends on the focus that day, but when it is, it brings out one of the Pilates principles: how your hips, knees and ankles line up.

Feet in straps

We'll show you how to put the straps on and how to find control in them, for exercises like bend and stretch and short spine.

Hands in straps

To mobilise the whole upper body and work on posture, especially in the upper back, with exercises like open elbows and rowing preps.

Long and short box

We'll show you where the box goes, and how to get on and off it safely.

Along the way we might use props like the box, a fitness circle, a squishy ball or a block.

I'm completely new to Pilates. Where should I start?

Fox Fundamentals is made for you. We'll break down the core Pilates principles so you can build real awareness in your body, then take time with the essential exercises so you can feel what you're doing. Over time the shapes and patterns repeat and everything clicks into place. We all started somewhere.

Do I need to do Fox Fundamentals before Fox Signature?

No. You don't need a certain number of classes to unlock Signature, and it's really up to you. We'd recommend Fundamentals if you've never done reformer before or you've had a long break. If you've done 5 or more recent classes at another studio, Signature will be fine, though the cueing might take a class to get used to. Not sure? Ask us, we love that chat.

I'm not flexible. Will I struggle?

No. Flexibility is something Fox Fundamentals builds, not something you need to start. Mobility is often strength in disguise, and we work on that too.

Can I come if I have an injury?

Usually, yes. If it's chronic or severe, check with your doctor before starting anything new. Not sure? Email hello@wildfoxpilates.co.uk and tell us what's going on. We're not doctors, but we'll know whether Pilates will help or hinder. If it's recent or severe, we may suggest a 1:1 first.

How many Fundamentals classes should I do before moving to Signature?

That's different for everyone. Most people do 5 to 10 classes before mixing it up, but you might be ready sooner. There's no ladder. Once we get to know you, we can help guide that if you want us to. And lots of regulars come back to Fundamentals on purpose, because it just feels good.
